Asian-Pacific American (APA) or Asian-Pacific Islander (API) is a term sometimes used in the United States to include both Asian Americans and Pacific Islands.

It is estimated that, by the year 2050, some ethnic minority groups (e.g., Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander) will increase by more than 200% from the year 2000.

This report was made possible by a collaborative effort between the National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education.

We use the term “Asian and Pacific Islander” to include all people of Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander ancestry who trace their origins to the countries.

For Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, NBC News is taking a closer look at some of the terminology used when discussing Asian.
