Butch and femme are terms used in the lesbian subculture to ascribe or acknowledge a masculine (butch) or feminine (femme) identity with its associated traits.
This term is also used to describe a specific lesbian identity (i.e. butch/femme). Use the term with caution since in some contexts it can be.
